Question for the Week:
What is darkness?

Weekly Foundational Read-Aloud: 
Can't You Sleep Little Bear? by Martin Waddell

Questions to ask your child in response to the read-aloud:


  • What did Big Bear and Little Bear use to light their cave? 
  • What do you use to light the place you live?
  •   Why did Big Bear and Little Bear go home when it got dark outside?


Learn at Home activity for today:

Tuesday:
  • Breathe. Place a light object (e.g. cotton ball, feather, piece of paper, round pencil, small ball, etc.) on one end of a table and see if you and your child can blow it to the other side. Repeat with other objects of differing weights.

Questions to ask your child:


  • What did you observe here/when ____? 
  • What did your sense of ____ tell you about ____? 
  • What will you try next? 
  • I wonder what would happen if ____? 
  • How do you know? 
  • How could we find out?

  • Where does Little Bear sleep?
  • Why couldn't Little Bear sleep?
  • What did Big Bear do to help Little Bear sleep?


Learn at Home activity for today:

Monday:
      
Draw and Build. Look outside with your child at the area near where you live. Select a building or structure that looks interesting to both of you. Draw a picture of the building/structure together. Talk about what you see as you draw together. Hang the picture at your child’s eye level, or place it on the floor near where you will build, and then use materials you have available to build the building/structure together. For example, you might use blocks, connecting blocks (e.g. Duplos, Legos), cardboard boxes, pots and pans, cups, or other household items to build together.


Questions to ask your child:

  • Tell me about your work. I notice that you ____. 
  • What are some other things you could add? 
  • I wonder what would happen if ____. Why? How do you know? 
  • How could you build ____?

  What color does the illustrator use to show light?
  What color does the illustrator use to show darkness? Why?


Learn at Home activity for today:

Friday:
      Fun Friday. Using a toy/ toys of choice, create something special.  Have your child create a story about their creation.  Children are not limited to one toy.  Please use as many toys as necessary to create a meaningful story.

Question for the Week:
What kind of lights are around us?

                  Questions to ask your child in response to the read-aloud:
  •  The people in this book rode in a car and on the subway.  Do cars and subways have lights? Why?
  •   What do you notice about the pictures in this book? Why do you think the illustrator only used black and white?


Learn at Home activity for today:

Thursday:
      Crayon fun. Using a coloring sheet of your choice, you can sit with your child and emphasize coloring within the lines.  Children can work on coloring slowly and thoughtfully.  Ask your child to practice coloring with varying types of pressure.  Ask how the drawing changes when they apply more pressure to the crayon versus when they color lightly.
