Week of February 18th!!

Reminders / Notices:
  • School is Closed on Monday, February 18th. 
  • Thursday, February 21st is the 100th Day of School.  Students can dress up to look like 100-year-olds.
  • There will be 12:00 p.m. dismissal on Monday, February 25th. 
  • There will be Early Dismissal at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 1st.  There will be NO AFTER SCHOOL.
  • Friday, March 1st will be Dr. Seuss Dress Up Day and Costume Contest.  Students are invited to dress up like their favorite Dr. Seuss character.


 Unit Topic:
 Transportation

 Essential Question for the Unit:
 How does my community use various modes of transportation?

 Focus Questions for this Week:
 How do we stay safe when using transportation?

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:
Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavares will work with students in the listening center. They will play a CD with different transportation sounds. Each student will have a dry erase board showing different vehicles. The students will circle the vehicle that matches they sound they hear on the CD.
  
Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:
PK.CKW.5 (Technology): Uses the knowledge of technology to increase learning. 

Foundational text for the week:
Go! Go! Go! Stop! by Cherise Mericle Harper 


QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ASKED THROUGHOUT THE WEEK:

Level 1: Recall
What was Little Green’s first word?
What did the trucks do when Little Green said,“Go?” Why did this become a problem?

Level 2: Skill/Concept
Why was Little Red important? Why was Little Yellow important?

Level 3: Strategic Thinking
Little Green, Red and Yellow made a traffic light. What are some other traffic signals or signs you see outside?
What do traffic lights do?
Why is it important to follow traffic lights and signals?

Level 4: Extended Thinking
Little Green and Little Red were opposites. Name some other things that are opposites
Little Green, Little Yellow and Little Red had to work together to help the trucks. What are some things you can do with other children to help keep the classroom happy and safe?

Lessons and activities for the week:

Blocks- Students are invited to create a variety of ramps and use different vehicles to race, predicting which one will go down the fastest and why. 

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be transformed into a  subway station. Students are invited to create the 1 train using large pieces of cardboard.  

Art- An assortment of shape cutouts and pictures of vehicles will be added to the center.  Students will be invited to reference the vehicles to create their own vehicles.

Science- Students are invited to create boats (with teacher support) and then will be asked to predict if their boat will float or sink, why or why not?

Math- Students will be invited to match numbered cars to the corresponding amount of people each car holds. 

Library- Students are invited to sequence the pictures and retell a familiar story, using a felt board.

Writing-  Students will be invited to match lettered cars to their corresponding spots in a "parking lot".

Sensory- Sand and water, or play-doh.
