Transformation

What is transformation and how do things change?

Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit: 

Many things around me change.
There are many ways objects can change.

There are many kinds of changes in nature. 

Some things about me change and some things stay the same. 

Learning Centers and Activities:

Blocks: Children will be invited to measure each other with blocks and count how many blocks tall they are.

Pretend Play: Children will be encouraged to create a kindergarten classroom in the dramatic play area. 

Art: Children will use paper plates to draw a mouth and express an emotion (i.e. a smile for happy, frown for sad) then turn the plate over and draw another mouth expressing a different emotion on the back. 

Science: Students will be able to make predictions about what will happen when you mix vinegar and baking soda

 Math: Children will be invited to tape two cardboard tubes diagonally onto a wall facing each other. They will place a basket or container below the tubes so that when items are dropped into the tubes they will both fall into the basket. The students will count the items and each basket to see how many they have in total. For example, “Two on one side and two more on the other side made four in the basket.”) 

Writing: The students will play a game with pictures of things that can be combined to form compound words (i.e. “peanut “butter,” “cow” and “boy” and “tooth” and “brush”)

Library: The children will be invited to use puppets to read or act out some of their favorite transformation books. 

Sand/water sensory: The students will be provided with small toy boats and a number of small manipulatives to place on the boat before the boat sinks.

•The last FULL day of school will be on Monday, June 26^th. 

• The Pre-K For All Moving-Up ceremony will be on Tuesday, June 27^th, at 

10:00 a.m.  Parents are asked to bring in students at 9:45 a.m.

•Each student is permitted up to three (3) guests for the moving up ceremony.

• Report Cards will be distributed on Wednesday, June 28^th.

• Dismissal is 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28^th.

Week of June 5th!

Unit Topic: 

Babies 

Essential Question 

What are babies? 

Focus Questions 

How do babies change?

Student Outcomes 

Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit: 

Human babies need special food and care. 

Animal babies need special food and care. 

There are similarities and differences in the ways babies are cared for. 

All babies grow. 

Learning Centers and Activities:

Blocks- Students are invited to use blocks to create a nursery or place to care for a baby.

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be turned into a pediatrician’s office.  Students will pretend to be a pediatrician to care for babies by measuring their growth with a measuring tape. Students will be encouraged to use writing utensils for children to take notes about the babies, schedule appointments, etc.

Art- Students will be invited to create an artwork by mixing baby powder and paint. 

Science- Small plastic eggs will be available for students to open and determine if the baby animals inside hatches from an egg or not. 

Math-Students families will be invited to share how long their child was at birth. The teacher will assist students in cutting out a yellow piece of string to indicate the length they were at birth. The teacher will use a piece of blue ribbon to measure the length of the students now. The teacher and students will compare the two lengths to discuss how much bigger s/he is now than when s/he was born. 

Writing: The students will be invited to make a book about the animal babies they are investigating.  

Library- Students are invited to read books about our theme, babies.

Sand/water sensory -Water and soap will be added to the water table for children to bathe babies. The sand table will be turn into a changing 

table.
