  • The Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons, HERE

Read-Aloud Questions:

Level 1: Recall

What parts of plants can be vegetables?

What are some different types of vegetables?

Where do vegetables grow?

How do vegetables get to grocery stores?

Level 2: Skill/Concept

What are some different ways that you eat vegetables?

What are some things people have to do if they want to grow a vegetable garden?

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Some people grow their own vegetable garden. If you were going to grow a vegetable garden, what vegetables would you grow? Why?

Why do you think farmers on big farms sometimes use machines to harvest the vegetables?

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Vegetables are good for your body. How do they help your body?

Why is it important to take good care of your body?

Vegetables can be different colors. Why do you think vegetables are different colors?

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.SCI.6. [P-LS3-1.] Develops a model to describe that some young plants  and animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents

Remote Learning Weekly Activity

Cut out several paper watermelons, add a number to each one, and ask your child to put the appropriate number of seeds on each watermelon. Encourage your child to write the corresponding number.

Germinate Seeds and Watch Them Sprout on the Windowsill

You’ll Need

  • Small plastic zipper storage bag
  • Dried, uncooked beans, peas, or seeds
  • Paper towels
  • Water

For this experiment, choose a window where the seeds will get plenty of light.

Step 1: Have your child cut a paper towel in half and fold it a few times so it can fit into the zipper storage bag.

Step 2: Soak the paper towel in water and slide it into the bag. Smooth it so that it’s relatively flat.

Step 3: Let your child position two beans or seeds about three centimeters from the bottom of each bag, on one side of the paper towel. Don’t worry if they don’t stay in place, but if necessary, stuff a little piece of paper towel into the bottom of the bag so that the seeds aren’t sitting in water.

Step 4: Seal the bag part way, leaving an opening near the top so the growing plants can get some air.

Record the beans’ germination by drawing and measuring them each day. Have your child make a science notebook and use it to record his observations.

Unit Topic:

Plants

Essential Question for the Unit:

How do plants grow and why are they important?

Focus Questions for this Week:

What are some different kinds of plants?

#1 Focused Learning activity for the week:

Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavares will work with students in the

math center.  The teacher will cut out several paper watermelons, add a number to each one, and ask children to put the appropriate number of seeds on each watermelon. Students are encouraged to write the corresponding number.

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.MATH.3. [NY-PK.CC.3.] Understands the relationship between numbers and quantities to 10, connects counting to cardinality

#2 Focused Learning activity for the week:

See It Grow Plant Lab

Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavares will invite students to science center. The students will see how seeds grow in three plexiglas greenhouses containing a nontoxic gel that accelerates growth and gives students a clear view of the roots.

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.SCI.5. Plans and conducts investigations to determine how familiar plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive in the environment

Lessons and Activities for the Week:

Blocks- Students will be invited to build a garden using blocks and materials added to the block center.

Art- The teacher will supply pipe cleaners as well as tissue paper circles. Children can pierce the middle of the tissue paper circles with the pipe cleaner, adding as many as they would like, then fold the circles up to create a flower. After creating these flowers

Science- The teacher will provide individual pictures of the plant life cycle. Students will be asked to sequence the pictures. The teacher will provide pictures / diagrams for children to refer to as they discuss each stage in the life cycle.

Math- The teacher will cut out several paper watermelons, add a number to each one, and ask children to put the appropriate number of seeds on each watermelon. Students are encouraged to write the corresponding number.

Library- Students are invited to read books about our theme, plants.

Writing- Students will write letters on a sheet of construction paper.  They can glue or place seeds onto the letter.  The teacher will talk with students about words that start with the letter.

Sensory- Students will be able to play with their own individual containers of play-doh.
