• My Five Senses

Essential Question for the Unit:

• How do we use our senses to explore, investigate and understand the world around us?

 

Focus Question for the Week Related to the Text:

• How do we use our sense of sight?

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

• Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Madera will work with students in order to transform the dramatic play center into a farmer’s market. Students will be asked to brainstorm in order to think of what objects should be added to the center in order to create a farmer’s market. 

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

• PK.AL.4: Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness to learn new things and have new experiences.

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

 

Level 1: Recall 

What are some things the book says you might see if you take a neighborhood walk in the almost- night? 

What does the book suggest you do if you see a dark, empty window when you’re out walking? 

Level 2: Skill/Concept

 

What are some things you see when you take a walk near your home/pre-K? 

What sense are you using when you use your eyes to look around for things on a walk? 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

What might people see in our classroom if they noticed our windows here? 

If our classroom windows were dark and you couldn’t see inside, what story might you tell about it? 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

How does our sense of sight help us learn about our world? 

The boy in this story learns about his neighborhood by observing the windows in the homes near him. 

What are some other ways he could learn about his neighborhood? 

 

 

Lessons and Activities for the Week:

 

Blocks-Children are encouraged to use tree shaped blocks.  Students will be able to explore how the blocks feel and look compared to the other blocks in the block area.

 

Pretend Play-The Dramatic Play center will be transformed into a farmer's market.     

 

Art-Play-doh will be added to the art center as children discuss how the play-doh feels, looks, and smells.

 

Science-Magnifying Glasses will be added to the science area. Children will be invited to use their sense of sight and investigate various materials (e.g., found materials from like outside leaves, pinecones, acorns etc.)

 

 

Math-Students will be able to sort animal manipulatives by color, size, type, and/or texture.

 

Library-Students are invited to look at our classroom books and discuss what they see with their peers.

 

Writing-Scented markers will be provided in the writing center. Students will be encouraged to use their sense of smell as they use the markers.

 

Sensory-Sand and water, or play-doh.

Building Tour

 

The teacher will invite students to go on a field trip around the pre-K program. The children will be introduced to program support staff and have them share how they are helpful.

Who are the other people in our building that help keep it clean? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

Why is it important to keep our classroom and our pre-K building clean?

Exploring Emotions

 

The teacher will provide pictures of people making various expressions. Children will be invited to look in the mirror and copy the expressions. The teacher will take pictures of the children mimicking the emotions. We will discuss emotions and consider when we might experience them and how to recognize them in others.

 

  Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.SEL.2 Recognizes self as an individual having unique abilities, characteristics, feelings, and interests

Level 1: Recall

What does Izzy notice about Belle? What does Belle do? What are other things Belle describes in the story? Where does Belle say we can find differences?

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept 

 The book discusses differences we can find in nature. When we are outside, what are some things we can see that are from nature? Do the things you mentioned look different from each other? What is different about them? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

What emotions is Izzy's face expressing at the beginning and end of the book? Do her feelings seem to change? Izzy learned that differences make us unique. What makes you unique? What are some things that What happened in the story that caused her feelings to change? Make our pre-k classroom unique?

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

In the book the teacher, Mr. Jay, says nature is smart. Why would he say nature is smart? In what ways do you think nature is smart?
