Week of March 27th

Unit Topic: Water

Essential Question for this unit:

What does water do?

Focus Question:

How does water help us?

Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit:

• Water is all around us.

• Water changes depending on how warm or cold it is.

• Some things float in water and some sink. Some things change when you put them in water.

• All living things need water.

Learning Centers and Activities

Blocks:

Pictures of Ice Castles will be displayed in the Blocks/Construction Center. The students will be invited to create ice castles.

Dramatic Play:

Students will be provided with large boxes of cardboard in the dramatic play area for students to sit in and pretend they are boats.

Art:

The students will be invited to draw a picture with crayons and watercolor paint. The students will be encouraged to discuss the changes to the picture as they add the watercolor paint.

Discovery Area/Science:

The students will be invited to test how well different substances (e.g., sugar, salt flour, oil, rice, etc.) dissolve in water by placing them in testing tubes.

Math:

Small plastic ducks links will be provided in the math area for students to connect, make patterns and count.

Sand and Water/Sensory:

Students will be invited to bathe baby dolls and talk about how people use water to stay clean.

Library:

The words to the Itsy Bitsy Spider song will be written on chart paper and place by the library with a couple toy spiders in a basket.

Writing:

Students will be invited to look at pictures of snowflakes and discuss what types of lines they see.

Gross Motor

Students will be able to dance to music, run, and climb at the playground or ride tricycles and scooters in the gymnasium.

Week of March 20!

Unit Topic: Water

What happens when we put things in water?

Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit:

Water is all around us.
Water changes depending on how warm or cold it is.
Some things float in water and some sink. Some things change when you put them in water.
All living things need water.

Learning Centers and Activities

Blocks:

After reading It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw the students will be invited to pretend that a blue piece of paper is a cloud. Then, the students will be instructed to fold it in half, add a dab of white paint, fold the paper closed again then press and open. The teacher will ask

"what do you see ?"

Art: Students will be invited to create letter art with letter stamps sponges. The teacher will talk to students about the sounds the letters make and how the sponge soaks up the paint.

Discovery Area/Science: The students will be invited to test how well different substances (e.g., sugar, salt flour, oil, rice, etc.) dissolve in water by placing them in testing tubes.

Math Manipulatives: Small plastic ducks links will be provided in the math area for students to connect , make patterns and count.

Week of February 27th !

Theme of the Week: Celebrating Dr. Seuss!

Question of the Week:

Who is Dr. Seuss?

Learning Centers and Activities

Blocks- Zoo animals will be provided in the block area for students to a build a zoo. The book If I Ran the Zoo will be available in the block area.

Dramatic/Pretend Play- Students will use play dough to pretend to cook green eggs and ham.

Art- Students will be encouraged to create their own “Cat in the Hat” hats.

Science- Students will create Oobleck with cornstarch, water and green food coloring.

Math-After reading One fish , Two fish students will be encouraged to

add the right number of fish to each cup in a muffin pan.

Library- The teacher will provide a collection of Dr. Seuss book in the library center.

Writing- Students will play a rhyming game with words associated with Dr. Seuss stories. The Rhyming cards will have pictures.

Technology- Weekly learning games on iPads are provided.

Sensory- Shaving cream will be provided for students to explore texture.

Week of February 21st

Theme for the Unit: Light!

Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit:

• There are many types of lights in our homes and our cities.

• Light helps us see and stay warm.

• Light helps plants grow.

• When there is little or no light it is dark. Shadows appear when an object blocks light.

Learning Centers and Activities:

Blocks- Students will be invited to use old CDs and cylinder blocks will be covered in aluminum foil to explore how the CDs reflect light.

Dramatic/Pretend Play- Sunglasses will be added to Pretend Play. Students are encouraged to discuss when and where they would wear sunglasses.

Art- Clear contact paper and tissue paper will be added to the art center in order for students to make "stained glass windows."

Science- Students will be able to sort animals into the two categories of nocturnal vs. diurnal.

Math- Students will be able to match shape manipulatives with their shadow.

Library- The teacher will write on poster paper the poem My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson and read it to students.

Writing- Students will explore hole punch letters on paper and place a flashlight over it.

Technology- Weekly learning games on iPads are provided.

Sensory- Mirrors will be placed inside the water table. Students will use use a flashlight to explore what happens when light hits the mirror inside the water table.
