Invite your child to draw/cut pictures of different sources of light after discussing what kinds of lights are around us.

How and why do we use different kinds of light?

           Focused Learning activity for the week:

Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavares will work with students in the

science center.  They will model how to use and care for the light table. They will observe each student as they use the light table and ask higher order thinking questions about their experiences. Teachers and students will discuss what an X-ray is and what they are used for.

PK.CKW.6 (Science): Acquires knowledge about the physical properties of the world.

Level 1: Recall 

What are some of the different sources of light in this book? 

What happens when you turn on a lamp or a flashlight? 

What are some of the things light can do? 

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept 

How can the moon help us see? 

Why do we turn on lights when it is dark? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

There are many different kinds of light in this book. What kinds of lights are around us? 

How does light help us? 

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

What would happen if we did not have any light in our classroom? What would happen if you did not have any light where you live? What would you do? 

Sometimes we want light around us. Sometimes we do not. When might you want it to be dark? 

How can you make a space dark when it is light outside? 

 

 

Lessons and activities for the week:

Blocks- Students are invited to explore how they might use blocks and a flashlight to create shadow letters.  

 

Pretend Play- Students will be able to use flashlights for shadow play.  

 

Art-  Students will be invited to create sun catchers with tissue paper and paint.  

 

Science- Students will be able to use the light table to look at x-rays and an assortment of translucent objects.   

 

Math- Students will be able to match shape manipulativeswith their shadow.  

 

Library- Students are invited to read books about our theme, light.  

 

Writing- Students are invited to use a trace and draw projector. 

 

Sensory- Students will be able to play with their own individual containers of play-doh.

Remote Learners Weekly Activity:

Exploring the water Cycle

Invite your child to draw a sky scene (e.g., sun and clouds) on the outside of a small sealable plastic bag. Fill 1/6 of the bag with water and seal. Hang in the window. Invite your child to predict what will happen. Let the bag hang for several days and observe. The water should evaporate into vapor then change back into a liquid as it cools, forming drops inside the bag.

Ask your child: 

What changes do you see happening inside the bag? 

How is the weather (e.g., rain and snow) similar to this experiment?

PK.SCI.8. [P-ESS2-1.] Asks questions, makes observations, and collects and records data using simple instruments to recognize patterns about how local weather conditions change daily and seasonally

Exploring the Water Cycle

Unit Topic:

Water

 

 

     Essential Question for the Unit:

  What does water do?

 

 

     Focus Questions for this Week:

 What happens to water when it changes temperature?

 

 

           Focused Learning activity for the week:

Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavares will work with students in the science center.  They will discuss the water cycle, using the terms, precipitation, condensation, evaporation and collection.

The children will be invited to draw a sky scene (e.g., sun and clouds) on the outside of a small sealable plastic bag. Fill 1/6 of the bag with water and seal. Hang in the window. The children will be encouraged to predict what will happen. We will let the bag hang for several days and observe.

PK.SCI.5: Plans and conducts investigations to determine how familiar plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive in the environment.

Snow by Uri Shulevitz

PK. ELAL.7: Develops and answers questions about characters, major events, and pieces of information in a text. 

 

 

QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ASKED THROUGHOUT THE WEEK:

Level 1: Recall

How did the city look before it started to snow? How did the city look when it was covered in snow? What does the man with the hat say about the snow? What does the woman with the umbrella say about the snow? 

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept

Do you think the boy with the dog wanted it to snow? How do you know? The radio and television said, “No snow.” The book says the snowflakes don’t listen to the radio. What does that mean? The boy in this book is wearing a hat and scarf and the other people are wearing big jackets. Why? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

When if first started to snow, the snowflakes melted. Why? When it started to snow more, the book says the rooftops got lighter. How did the snow make the rooftops lighter? How did the people in the book feel when there was a lot of snow? How do you know? 

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Does it snow when it is warm outside? Why or why not? When does snow melt?  What happens to snow when it melts?
How will the city look when the snow melts? 

 

Lessons and activities for the week:

 

Blocks- Pictures of bridges will be added to the center. Students are encouraged to try to build bridges. 

 

Art- Students are invited to draw a picture with crayons. They may choose to draw an underwater or rainy day scene. After their drawings are complete, watercolor paints will be used to lightly paint over their crayon drawings. 

 

Science- Students are invited to sort animals into two categories: those that live in water and those that live on land. 

 

Math- Seashells will be added to math center. Students will be able to match the correct number of shells to a number card. 

 

Library- Students are invited to read books about or theme, water.

 

Writing- Students will be asked the question, "Where can we find water?" and be asked to write or draw their answers.

 

Sensory- Students will be supplied with their own play-doh container.
