Week of May 30th!

Unit Topic: Babies

Essential Question:
What are babies?
Focus Questions
What can we learn about animal babies?
Student Outcomes
Enduring understandings that the student should have by the end of the unit:
Human babies need special food and care.
Animal babies need special food and care.
There are similarities and differences in the ways babies are cared for.
All babies grow.

Learning Centers and Activities:

Blocks- Students are invited to use blocks to create a nursery or place to care for a baby. 

Pretend Play- Pretend Play will be turned into a baby nursery.  Students will pretend to care for babies by feeding, cleaning, and changing the baby dolls provided.

Art- Students will be invited to create an artwork by mixing baby powder and paint. 

Science- Students will be able to play a matching game, matching the adult animal to its offspring.

Math-Students families will be invited to share how long their child was at birth. The teacher will assist students in cutting out a yellow piece of string to indicate the length they were at birth. The teacher will use a piece of blue ribbon to measure the length of the students now. The teacher and students will compare the two lengths to discuss how much bigger s/he is now than when s/he was born. 

Writing: The students will be invited to make a book about the animal babies they are investigating.  

Library- Students are invited to read books about our theme, babies.

Sand/water sensory -Water and soap will be added to the water table for children to bathe babies. The sand table will be turn into a changing
table.

Monday-School Closed for Memorial Day
Tuesday- Use a magazine to cut and paste pictures of babies.(adult supervision required to complete activity)**
Wednesday- Bring baby pictures to class
