Week of February 13th!!

REMINDERS

Unit Topic:

Transportation

 

Essential Question for the Unit:

How does my community use various modes of transportation?

 

Focus Questions for this Week:

Who operates the vehicles in my community?

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

 

Make a Vehicle

 

Children will be provided with recycled materials (e.g., boxes, empty and clean food containers) as well as tape and/or glue/tinkering materials to encourage children to build vehicles. The teacher will provide pictures of vehicles for the children to reference and encourage them to develop a plan for building before they begin. Have them consider what they will make and what materials they will need.

 

Differentiation:  Multiple entry points will be considered for all children to be successful.  For example, repeat directions, extend time, adapt materials, preview questions, and provide 1:1 support.

 

For children who need additional support: The teacher will provide1:1 support for children to create their vehicle. 

 

For children who are ready for a challenge: Children will be allowed to work independently on their while providing support if needed. 

 

Children whose home language is a language other than English: The teacher will provide the activity in the child’s native language.

 

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

 

PK.SCI.11. [K-2-ETS1-2.]Develops a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

 

Level 1: Recall

What was Little Green’s first word?

What did the trucks do when Little Green said, “Go? Why did this become a problem?

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept

Why was Little Red important?

Why was Little Yellow important?

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

Little Green, Red and Yellow made a traffic light. What are some other traffic signals or signs you see outside?

What do traffic lights do?

Why is it important to follow traffic lights and signals?

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Little Green and Little Red were opposites. Name some other things that are opposites.

Little Green, Little Yellow, and Little Red had to work together to help the construction vehicles. What are some things you can do with other children to help keep the classroom happy and safe?

  

Lessons and activities for the week:

 

Blocks-  Students are invited to create a variety of ramps and use different vehicles to race, predicting which one will go down the fastest and why. 

  

Pretend Play-Pretend Play will be transformed into a train station. Students are invited to create a train using large pieces of cardboard.

 

Art-  The teacher will provide recycled materials (e.g., boxes, empty and clean food containers) as well as tape and/or glue and invite children to build vehicles. Provide pictures of vehicles for the children to reference and encourage them to develop a plan for the building before they begin. Have them consider what they will make and what materials they will need.

 

Science-  The teacher will provide simple directions for folding a paper airplane and invite children to try to fold their own. Encourage children to explore how they might make the airplanes fly.

 

Math-  Students will be invited to match numbered cars to the corresponding amount of people each car holds. 

 

Library-  Students are invited to sequence the pictures and retell a familiar story, using a felt board.

 

Writing-  Students will be invited to match lettered cars to their corresponding spots in a "parking lot".

 

Sensory-  Students will be able to play with their own individual containers of play-doh.
