My Five Senses

Essential Question for the Unit:

How do we use our senses to explore, investigate and understand the

world around us?

Focus Question for the Week Related to the Text:

How do we use our sense of sight?

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Apple Orchard Sorting

The teacher will invite students to turn the dramatic play area into an

apple orchard. During the dramatic play apple orchard set up, the

students will be encouraged to sort the apples based on color. The teacher

will provide cut-out apples of different colors and three baskets. The

teacher will ask students,

How can we sort the apples by color?

For students who need additional support:
The teacher will place an apple inside the basket and ask students to match it.  The teacher will point to each apple placed inside the basket and ask students if they can find more (yellow, red or green) apples and put it inside the basket.

For students who are ready for a challenge:
The teacher will encourage students to think how else they can sort the apples. The children will be provided with different size apples to sort in baskets.

ELL’s:
The teacher will translate the activity to the student’s native language.

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.MATH.11: Sort objects and shapes into categories; counts the objects in each category.

Foundational Text for the Week:

Windows by Julia Denos link to the week’s foundational text click HERE!!

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

Level 1: Recall

What are some things the book says you might see if you take a

neighborhood walk in the almost- night?

What does the book suggest you do if you see a dark, empty window when

you’re out walking?

Level 2: Skill/Concept

What are some things you see when you take a walk near your home/pre

K?

What sense are you using when you use your eyes to look around for

things on a walk?

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

What might people see in our classroom if they noticed our windows

here?

If our classroom windows were dark and you couldn’t see inside, what

story might you tell about it?

Level 4: Extended Thinking

How does our sense of sight help us learn about our world?

The boy in this story learns about his neighborhood by observing the

windows in the homes near him.

What are some other ways he could learn about his neighborhood?
