Week of October 7th!!

Reminders!
  • Please bring in a picture of your family for us to hang on our family wall!
  • Class Picture Day is on Tuesday, October 8th.  Students are asked to wear the Pre-K For All uniform. 
  • School is CLOSED on Monday, October 14th, in observance of Columbus Day!
  • There is NO AFTER-SCHOOL on Tuesday, October 15th.
  • The Hispanic Heritage show is on Wednesday, October 16th at 9:30am!  Please dress your child in yellow clothing!  Parents are invited to attend.  The show will be held in the gymnasium.  
  • School is Closed on Wednesday, October 30th.  
  • Our Halloween Parade will be held on Thursday, October 31st at 9:00 am.  Parents are invited to attend.

  • My Five Senses
Essential Question for the Unit:
  • How do we use our senses to explore, investigate and understand the world around us?

Focus Question for the Week:
  • How do we use our sense of sight?

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:
  • Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. Tavarez will work with students in order to transform the dramatic play center into a farmer’s market. Students will be asked to brainstorm in order to think of what objects should be added to the center in order to create a farmer’s market. 


Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:
  • PK.AL.4: Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness to learn new things and have new experiences.
Foundational Text for the Week:
  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:
  • PK.ELAL.6: Retell stories or share information from a text.

Questions That Will Be Asked Throughout The Week:

Level 1: Recall
  • At the end of the book, what did the teacher see?
  • What did the children see?

Level 2: Skill/Concept
  • All of the animals in this book can see each other. Where do you think the animals in this book are?
  • The teacher is wearing glasses. What do glasses help people do?
  • What animals have you seen? Where?

Level 3: Strategic Thinking
  • The horse in this book is blue. Are horses ever blue?
  • If you could change the color of an animal, what animal would you change and what color would you make it? (Pink duck? Green squirrel?)
  • All of the animals and people in this book notice someone looking at them. How do you know when someone is looking at you?

Level 4: Extended Thinking
  • In this book we use our eyes to see the animals. If you could not see the animals how could you describe or tell other people about them?
  • Make a list of children you see. What do you think they can see? Do these children see something different than what you see?

Lessons and Activities for the Week:

Blocks- Children are encouraged to use tree shaped blocks.  Students will be able to explore how the blocks feel and look compared to the other blocks in the block area.

Pretend Play- The Dramatic Play center will be transformed into a farmer's market.     

Art- Play-doh will be added to the art center as children discuss how the play-doh feels, looks, and smells.

Science-Children will be encouraged to use their senses to explore pumpkins. 

Math- Students will be able to sort animal manipulatives by color, size, type, and texture.

Library- Students are invited to look at our classroom books and discuss what they see with their peers.

Writing- Scented markers will be provided in the writing center. Students will be encouraged to use their sense of smell as they use the markers.

Sensory- Sand and water, or play-doh.
